The form that my mother used to create out of multi-colored
rags were essentially dolls and balls. A ball made
out of strips of colored cloth is a strange living
thing. As one layer of colored material wears out
another shining color appears with a life of its
own. Both rag ball and rag doll get their life from
the same materials and yet the forms are different.
So I collected multi-colored rags and cloth strips,
spread them on the floor of the gallery, made some
balls and dolls, then put them in transparent boxes,
arranged them atop one another in the middle of
the space. Hung on the walls were many drawings
with a painting in the centre. I called the installation,
The Ball of Rags.
